“Courage” mixed media mosaic sculpture, 6.5″ x 8.5″ x 14.5″

Since my adventurous childhood growing up in Michigan and playing in the lush woods with my brother collecting rocks, leaves and shells, I have been inspired by the beauty and diversity of nature. I was infused with a deep love of the peace and abundance surrounding me.

This inspiration has led me to create art in many forms throughout my life.

“Secret Garden” mixed media mosaic sculpture, 12.5″ x 12″ x 7.5″

After delving into costumes, dancewear, fashion design, trapunto home textiles, silk painting and jewelry design, I discovered the art of mosaic design. The fusion of all my past experience with shape, color, texture and movement was instantly translated into this new exciting work.

“Rock & Roll” mixed media mosaic sculpture, 10.5″ x 7″ x 6″

Twenty years ago, I began creating large 3-D mosaic wall installations in my home. Fifteen of these are now complete and are receiving significant media attention. Five years ago this work began to transition into 3-D mosaic sculptures. In them, I found my true passion.

“Aerial Boundaries” mixed media mosiac sculpture, 17.5″ x 8″ x 18″

Soon, though, I realized that I needed to take a step back and learn how to make my own high-fire clay substrates to achieve what I was envisioning. This too is a never-ending journey of learning, trial and error, and yet more discovery.

“Valley of Dreams” mixed media mosaic sculpture, 11.75″ x 10″ x 8.75″

The payoff has been achieving a completely new kind of mosaic work, highly original, detailed and one-of-a-kind. While the mosaic materials vary from one piece to another, many pieces incorporate prized mineral specimens, fossils and crystals. They truly offer me limitless possibilities.

“Ocean of Dreams” mixed media mosaic sculpture, 15.5″ x 15″ x 6″

This work is constantly unfolding and evolving. While I certainly have a vision of the movement and feeling I wish to imbue in any given piece, it reveals itself to me as I work. It creates a symphony of form and color with abstract shapes which is completely open to the individual viewer’s interpretation.

“Chosen Path” mixed media mosaic sculpture, 11.5″ x 15″ x 10.5″

As with all of the art forms in which I’ve been absorbed, my mosaic techniques are self-taught and many are non-traditional. I am frequently asked if I teach mosaic work, but as yet have not done so. While my methods are certainly not guarded secrets, truthfully, I am just so busy creating my own work that I am reluctant to take the time required to do that.

I continue to design, create and sell my extensive lines of jewelry, but now I am also able to offer these free standing treasures for sale from my studio, online and galleries. My hope is that these works of art will be uplifting and inspirational over time to all who choose to possess them.

Painting Flowers Has Power! — Caryl Fine Art

When I paint flowers, I find them a wonderful subject. They are easy to arrange and their colors become the jumping off point for my color scheme selection. Even though I create abstract paintings of flowers, their essence is very much still there, and their colors and delicacy are what […]
