“The Five Senses”

ALPENA — The Seventh Annual Juried Art Show at Art in the Loft, entitled “The Five Senses,” will open Oct. 6.

Submissions will be accepted from July 15 through Sept. 4. Submissions will only be accepted in an online digital format.

If accepted, artists’ work will be on display in the 7,000-square-foot loft gallery, located on the third floor of the historic Center Building in downtown Alpena. “The Five Senses” will be on display in-gallery from Oct. 6 to Nov. 10, and online through Dec. 31.

The juror will be announced on July 15.

At the opening reception, the artist whose work is juried as Best of Show by the juror will receive a full year of exhibition space. This is good only for the WinterView 2022 and SummerView 2023 exhibits at Art in the Loft. Best of Show also includes a $300 cash prize.

Second place will receive $200, and third place will win $100. A People’s Choice winner will earn a $50 gift certificate.

“The Five Senses”

The multi-sensory nature of the arts stimulates brain synapses to fire as anyone of any age creates. Memory and cognition improve when combined with movement, sounds, textures, along with other sensory input. When working together, sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell help us perceive and maneuver the world around us.

Artists are to exemplify and bring attention to at least one of the five senses in their artwork. A short write up explaining the sense they chose and how it’s shown in their work will be required for every accepted piece.

“We look forward to filling the gallery with work that embodies how you, the artist, perceives this theme, whether it be abstract or literal,” said Art in the Loft Executive Director Justin Christensen-Cooper.

This call for submission is open to all artists working in all media including oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, pastel, drawing, print, mixed media, sculpture, assemblage, installation, fabric, and film. All artwork must be original, and created within the last three years.

There is a $35 fee for the first entry, and $10 for each additional, with a maximum of three total entries per artist. All entries must be registered/received by 11:59 p.m., Sept. 4. All entry fees are non-refundable.

Art in the Loft is a hub for arts and creative learning, which hosts a full schedule of visual and culinary art classes, and works in conjunction with local schools to facilitate programs for area students. Art in the Loft is free and open to the public because of many many members and sponsors.
