Herbert Hernandez – The Triple-Threat Performer and Where He Stands Today
In the early 2000s, the Philippines witnessed the rise of the alternative rock/pop band 6cyclemind, which quickly gained fame. After nearly a decade of success in recording and touring, the band underwent some lineup changes, bringing in Herbert Hernandez as their lead guitarist. Hernandez, already an established musician, had previously founded Moonstar88, a band he continues to tour with as lead guitarist and songwriter. Balancing two mainstream bands might seem like a full plate, but for Hernandez, this is just the beginning. Being a rock star is not even his full-time occupation. Alongside his music career, Herbert Hernandez co-founded GIGIL, an internationally renowned independent advertising agency, with his business partner Badong Abesamis.
While Hernandez’s nights are often dedicated to performing on stage, his days are packed with meetings, presentations, and creative sessions with local and international clients. His talents extend beyond music, as he excels in the visual arts, making him a sought-after figure in both industries. Each day is a blend of various pursuits that fuel his passion and creativity.
A typical day for Hernandez starts with a prayer, followed by plenty of coffee. His workday at GIGIL runs from 9 to 6, filled with client calls and meetings, though he makes time for lunch with his family. Hernandez and his wife have been married for 15 years and have three children. He prioritizes family time, often bringing his kids to the office when possible, allowing them to see what their father does. After work, he enjoys dinner with his family before heading off to a gig with either 6cyclemind or Moonstar88. To unwind, he ends his day playing Mobile Legends with his wife. Hernandez also makes time for one date night per week, a dedicated family day, and one international vacation each year. Staying active and healthy is a priority, with frequent family bike rides.
Despite his packed schedule, Hernandez frequently travels for both music and business. If something has to give, it’s usually his sleep; some nights, he sleeps for as little as four hours. However, the positive feedback he receives from fans and clients keeps him energized and motivated.
In addition to his music and advertising careers, Hernandez is committed to supporting others in his industries. In 2018, he launched The Indierectory, a platform connecting independent Filipino advertising professionals and freelancers with agencies and companies. His goal is to provide Filipino talent with paid opportunities, aiming to eventually expand this initiative globally.
In 2010, Hernandez also founded Lakihan mo Logo (“Make the Logo Bigger”), which he describes as “a commercial break for people making commercials.” This concert series features Manila-based ad agency talent and serves as a creative outlet for those in the advertising industry. Hernandez, who nearly gave up his music career while advancing in advertising, now offers this outlet to his colleagues. Since its inception, Lakihan mo Logo has hosted 58 concerts, with some performers even landing record deals. Hernandez has also organized 12 “Rockovery” concerts to raise funds for advertising industry members facing serious illness.
Now 40 years old, Hernandez hopes to retire within the next 15 years. Known for being “tireless,” “always switched on,” and “committed to doing great work,” it will likely come as a surprise when Hernandez eventually steps back from his many roles. As a master of time management and prioritization, fans can expect more impressive ad campaigns and memorable music from this multi-talented individual. Whether you know Herbert Hernandez as the guitarist for 6cyclemind, Moonstar88, or as the co-founder of GIGIL, one thing is certain: he dedicates each day to excelling in whichever role you recognize him in.
