When I was a child, my grandparents traveled extensively. I was fortunate to travel with them from time to time. My grandmother adored the arts and learning, so the trips were filled with museums, ancient ruins, music and the literature she had me read about in preparation for the trip.

Creating art, however, was not a journey I thought I would ever embark upon.

About fifteen years ago, a friend signed us both up for a six week watercolor class. Unbeknownst to me, she had already paid for it and I was told that I owed her money. Although I was reluctant to go at first, I found that the class opened my eyes to a whole different world. Once that happened, there was no turning back.

I loved the process of watercolor but I particularly loved having a new challenge. For several years I dabbled with watercolor and then a bit of oil. I never took my art seriously or dived deeply into my work until I was met with a diagnosis of cancer.

During that year of treatment, I found I had enough knowledge of painting to do color studies and work through Ted Goerschner’s Workshop in a Book. These activities kept my mind engaged and somewhat focused. They provided a much needed distraction.

During that time, I discovered the remarkable healing power of art.

As I began to recover and grow stronger, I dove head first into oil painting—in particular landscapes—learning as much as I possibly could.

Art and faith gave me so much during that difficult time in my life. I wanted to be able to share the peace I found. The landscapes I painted recalled to me images of my life growing up in the west; a life filled with barefoot days roaming unhindered through farms and open spaces, often on horseback.

Wide open spaces, intimate views and water and rocks all represent a tranquility of space and time to me. They offer time to reflect and ponder, things we don’t often do at home when schedules, media and noise consume our thoughts.

All my prior experience has taught me the importance of connecting with nature, a reverence for the Creator and learning from those who came before us. Through each of my paintings I strive to convey and invite others to experience the feeling of open spaces, self-reflection and taking the time to slow down. I am grateful for a life to give back the gifts I have been given.
