Theater productions continue at Laredo College and are making many actors’ dreams come true with the upcoming auditions of an opera musical fall production.

“Cyrano de Bergerac” is a romantic musical comedy about a man who is very self-conscious about the size of his nose. He is convinced that he is unlovable, despite his profound feelings of love for a beautiful woman. Cyrano is also a poet and great swordsman.

Using a handsome tongue-tied man, who is also in love with the same woman, Cyrano woos her by proxy by speaking Cyrano’s words to her. Although initially attracted to the handsome man’s looks, she falls deeply in love with the soul and poetry of his words and no longer cares about his appearance. However, before the men can explain the truth of the situation to the woman, the handsome man is killed in battle and with no way to prove the truth and unwilling to stain the reputation of the fallen man or to cause the woman more pain, Cyrano chooses to let the truth of his love remain hidden.

The Laredo College Visual and Performing Arts Department will bring these humorous and romantic characters to life during the 2022 fall production of “Cyrano de Bergerac.” The department is looking for talented actors, actresses, singers and sword fighters to join the opera musical, which is set to fill the stage with a romantic and comic production scheduled between Oct. 27 and Nov. 6.

Auditions will be held on July 25 at 7 p.m. at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, Room 102. No experience is necessary to audition but is preferred. The person should possess singing or acting abilities, problem-solving skills and a team player mentality. The department is looking for around 25 male and female participants. No children’s roles will be auditioned for this production.

Prepared songs are encouraged but not required. Selected scenes will be provided for those auditioning to read and sing. The performers should wear clothes that allow them to move freely during the auditions.

The director will make the final selection with the advice of other professionals. The selected cast members that are eligible will be required to enroll in the Opera Musical Theatre and/or Stage Movements course at Laredo College. They must also be aware that students commit to participating in extended hours besides class hours.
