Nova Scotia awards $2.1 million in emergency funds to arts and culture groups | Regional-Lifestyles | Lifestyles
The recipients of much-needed support for Nova Scotia arts and culture organizations affected by the COVID-19 pandemic have been announced by the province.
A total of $2.1 million in one-time grants has been awarded to 89 groups around the province through the COVID-19 Emergency Support Program for Arts and Culture, which was launched on Nov. 5. The program is designed to help those who receive operating or project funding from the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage or Arts Nova Scotia, with each grant valued at up to $75,000 per organization.
Recipients from Yarmouth to Sydney include theatre companies, film festivals, cultural and arts organizations and special annual events like Halifax Pride, Hal-Con and Digby’s Wharf Rat Rally.
“This funding will help arts and culture organizations continue to operate, produce work and tell the stories of who we are as Nova Scotians,” said the province’s Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage, Suzanne Lohnes-Croft in Wednesday’s announcement.
“These organizations make an important economic and social contribution to communities across our province. They show up for us, and this is a moment when we need to show up for them.”
The value of the grants ranges from $3,000 for Halifax Camerata Singers and $5,000 for the Acadia Regional Youth Orchestra to $25,000 for Mayworks Halifax Festival Society and $35,000 for Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre.
Recipients of the full $75,000 grants include the Atlantic Fringe Festival, the Gaelic College in St. Anns, Highland Arts Theatre, Mermaid Theatre, Neptune Theatre, New Dawn Convent Society, Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo and the Savoy Theatre.
Mary Harwell, manager of Wolfville’s cultural hub the Acadia Cinema’s Al Whittle Theatre, said the emergency funding is vital to the longterm health and viability of the facility which hosts local theatre and concerts, repartory screenings and Devour! The Food Film Festival.
“Having lost a large percentage of our rental income this past year, and facing an unclear future, these funds will assist us as we plan for and work towards a new vision for the cultural and community hub that this building represents,” said Harwell, whose theatre received a $19,715 grant.
“These funds are helping us to bridge the gap until we can welcome full audiences back into our theatre and once again be the cultural hub for lovers of film, music and theatre in our community and beyond.”
The complete list of recipients is posted on the Nova Scotia Communities, Culture & Heritage website.
