Sebastiaan Knot | Using Light to Beautify a Given Space
About Sebastiaan Knot
Sebastiaan Knot (b.1970) is a visual artist living and working in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He uses light as his material to create contrasts of color and form, embellishing the given space. After a career as a photographer, graphic, and web designer, he established his photography studio, which he still runs successfully for 20-plus years.
In recent years his work has shifted from commercial clients and commissioned assignments to fine art.
He shows most recently at Bos Fine Art Galerie in the Hague and sells work internationally and in the Netherlands. His work is in the Maasstad Hospital collection and private collections. In July 2022, his art appeared in a notable exhibition with the Fondation Vasarely, part of a show with Victor Vasarely. Bos Fine Art Galerie represents him in the Hague and Utrecht, NL.
Sebastiaan Knot’s Workflow
He places a composition of simple colorless shapes in the studio. Around the arrangement, he sets up studio lamps with different color filters. When shooting, the piece is illuminated simultaneously by all lamps to create a shot to capture a unique moment with scattered light, shadows, and mixed colors. The use of a lens adds optical illusion and questions what you see. There is no digital manipulation of the image. The works are unique or in limited editions.
Knot’s geometric abstraction challenges our conventional way of observing reality, shedding light on the elementary mechanisms that underlie our visual perception.
