NEW CASTLE — The New Castle-Henry County Public Library’s summer reading program for children will have an innovative approach this year with an emphasis on overall learning, according to a release..

The summer learning program will begin on June 4. The theme for this year is “Oceans of Possibilities.” In addition to being invited to spend the summer reading, children are also encouraged to discover and create their way through the summer.

Kids and parents will track learning using paper Summer Learning logs, or a new, easy-to-use app through Reader Zone. In order to complete the program, participants will need to read 800 minutes, complete four discover activities, and complete four create activities. Discover activities can be completed by hands-on exploration by coming to a library program or visiting the park. Create activities can be completed by designing, drawing, writing, or building sea creatures and their homes. Once half of the requirements have been completed participants may visit the library for a prize. Upon completing all requirements, participants will receive a prize, a free book to keep, and a raffle ticket to be entered to win one of two prize baskets.

The library also will host “Oceans of Programs,” including Marvelous Mondays at the Arts Park, free lunches for kids and family movies on Wednesdays, a free kids’ breakfast every Thursday morning along with Family REC in June and Family Storytime in July. The library will host a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Station event once a month on Fridays and two different pool parties at the YMCA, as well as a foam party.

Teens and adults are invited to complete the Summer Reading Challenge by reading 800 minutes in eight weeks to be entered in a drawing for a grand prize. Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to enjoy nautical- and pirate-themed activities taking place weekly.
